The Debs

THE DEBS: probably the most important social event in the life of all secondary school students. It is definitely the deciding factor for many as to whether to leave school or not prior to the Leaving Cert!

With all the panic and hype around the situation it becomes easy to forget things. So here is a simple check list to keep you on track for that important night:

Three months prior to the Debs:

Of course, it’s time to start choosing that all essential date!!
Guys and girls it’s time to start saving also.
Girls start looking for your dress. Ensure that you pick a colour that suits your hair and eyes. If you’re planning to dye your hair for your Debs make sure you consider this when choosing your dress. For example, if you have blue eyes, brown hair and pale skin look for dark purples, maroons and reds.
Book your transport. Don’t leave this to the last minute because there will be a huge demand since everyone attending your Debs will also be looking for a limo/fancy car.

Anyone with problem skin should start drinking at least eight glasses of water every day, eating lots of fruit and vegetables, using a good cleanser and a body wash to prevent the skin drying out.

For those of you planning on hitting the sunnier parts of the world before the Debs, wear sun cream and try not to get sunburn, white patches or strap marks.

Two months prior to the Debs:
Guys: Consult your date for the colour of her dress and hit the shops for your tuxes. Many guys prefer to rent rather than buy an expensive suit that will only be worn once.

One month prior to the Debs:Collect tickets. Confirm the booking of your limo if you are using one.
Girls: Book any of the following if you are planning to have them done professionally: hair/ make up/ tan/ wax/ nails /facial appointments. Don’t get your make up done before your hair as your make up may then sweat off in the hairdressers.
I’d recommend getting your nails done the day before just to give yourself a little extra time.
Wax or shave a few days prior to the event to avoid irritated skin.
If you’re attending more than one Debs I wouldn’t recommend fake tan because it will be washing off and patches aren’t attractive.
Guys: Get your corsage and chocolates for your date’s mother. (Tradition guys, okay!)

The message tone beeps and you are expecting a really nice sweet message from your gorgeous boi and then he turns into a Monster. It starts real nice and then you get to the middle of the message and oops you’re dumped.

Text Dumping is a pretty awful thing to do. Only a coward would dump someone over the phone, through a text, or through emails or IM.I mean...who would DO that? It's so low. Dumping anyone is never easy, no matter how much you like or dislike them, but to do it by text is soooo WRONG! It’s no laughing matter. Text dumping is worse than face-to-face dumping. If you are face to face with a person you can tell from the tone and atmosphere that perhaps the end is near. After the initial shock you start wondering, “what is wrong with me?” It’s rude, cowardly and pathetic. If you are going to hurt this person you should at least have the guts to do it face to face and not to take the easy way out. The really awful thing about text dumping is that the person who sent the messages gets away with it. I think many of us blame ourselves and then we think of every single conversation, action we did in their presence and start to go crazy with the “what if’s”. At the same time, the other half is out there having the time of their lives, probably getting more numbers from people they are eventually going to dump.

Breaking up with someone by text is totally CCU (CRUEL,COWARDLY,UNCOOL).

This video of Britney Spears' soon-to-be ex-husband apparently getting a text message informing him that the pop princess had filed for divorce became the most viewed item on the YouTube Internet site on Thursday, with more than 1 million hits. AND let's face it - it did nothing to help Britney's UNCOOL image!

Pop Princess Kylie styles for Dunnes!

Princess Kylie has already put her signature to a best-selling lingerie line, teamed up with H&M on a swimwear collection and even launched her own fragrance. Her latest venture Minogue has produced a range of luxurious yet affordable bedlinen exclusively for Dunnes.

Speaking at launch of the collection, Minogue explained how, having had a keen interest in fashion and home furnishing fostered during her teens by her grandmother, her entry into the homewares market represented an obvious progression.

The collection was inspired principally by her extensive globetrotting as well as by a series of personal pieces, including vintage fabrics, silk bedspreads from Buenos Aires and a 1930s eiderdown she bought on eBay. This is girly girl stuff with pretty patterns, feminine pastels, intricate embroidery and a liberal helping of glamorous glitter. It goes without saying the customer base for the collection is expected to be predominantly female.

These shots of Kyle Minogue are from the London launch of the new line which she calls "Kylie At Home". And that looks like a totally normal home!!Ah, who am I kidding…I love those pillow cases. If I were a diva like Kylie my bedroom would probably look exactly like that! So all you Divas and blingheads - get there before its all sold out!

Thanks for all the really cool ideas on teen bedrooms you sent us. Some were really fab. We have however chosen 3 of r fave and hope you like them too! Pixie

BEDROOM NO. 1 This soooo cool one belongs to MK Olsen (one of her many bedrooms!)It is soo uber-retro. We looove the pink and orange clash theme. Check out that chair! I want it!

BEDROOM NO. 2 This bedroom is really clever. It has a central panelled wall in purple that floats in the middle of the room. The wardrobe is part of the central panel but on the other side of the floating wall creating the illusion of a walk in wardrobe! The idea of using a sofa bed is so clever! When the girls come over to hang out in your room it feels like a studio apartment with the bed concealed. The paper ballons hang from a line attached to the wall.

BEDROOM NO. 3 The dotty about spotty bedroom again has the bed centrally placed which is definitely funkier than placing it against one side of the room as the bed is the most important component in the room. Like the room above it too has a central panel wall (coffee coloured)to divide the bedroom and give a walk in wardrope effect. This bed acts as a bed/ sofa/ storage. We love it! Again the paper balloons are attached to strings of varying lengths.

We also like these clever ideas you came up with for some DIY makeovers!

This room was a small box with a bunk bed. This clever person hacked the bunk bed and used wooden supports hammered into the wall and 3 metal bars to suspend the bunk beds from the ceiling creating a computer and tv space below.

Or why not simply divide the space in your room by using a curtain or a funky carpet suspended from the ceiling to divide you living and bedroom area?

Lastly, Guess what famous celeb hung out here during her childhood?

It’s our nation’s biggest festival. On March 17th we dust off our green jumpers and do what we do best, partaaay! Millions of people all over the world become honorary Irish citizens for the day and it’s normal to see leprechauns strolling down the road.

So, how are the countries party animals celebrating this year? Up and down the country, festival fever is coming on. Here is a taster of the many exciting events ‘ar súil’ for Paddy’s day! the gear!

Tribal gatherings in Galway:
An exciting parade is planned for Galway this year, as the city goes back to its roots with the theme of ‘Tribes’. Groups participating in the parade have interpreted the theme in many different ways, so it’s sure to be a colourful afternoon!

ROCKin’ it in Cashel:
If you plan on being in Munster for Paddy’s weekend, why not check out the Skyfest. The show involving pyrotechnics, lighting and music kicks off on the 15th at 6.30pm on the fantastic Rock of Cashel. It’s a long way to Tipperary, but it’ll be worth it!

A craicin’ ceili:
Put on your dancing shoes and get back to real Irish tradition with the ‘ceili mor’ which will be held on Patrick’s Day in Earlsfort Terrace, Dublin 2. Set to be an old fashioned good time!

A WOMAN was stuck on her boyfriend’s toilet for TWO YEARS, it was revealed yesterday.

Her legs wasted away and her skin grew around the seat.

Her boyfriend brought her food and water every day and asked if she was coming out of the bathroom — but she would reply: “Maybe tomorrow.”

He eventually called in police, who found the 35-year-old woman with her jogging bottoms pulled down to mid-thigh.

She initially refused to leave but was convinced to do so by the cops.

The seat was still attached to her as they took her to hospital to cut it away.

Sheriff Bryan Whipple said: “She was not glued. She was not tied. She was just stuck by her body.”

Police may charge the boyfriend, 36, with mistreating her — but he claims she just didn’t want to leave.

He has yet to explain why he waited so long before raising the alarm and telling cops: “Something’s wrong with my girlfriend.”

Lorcan Malone from Blackrock in Co. Louth. became hot property overnight when he was chosen as one of the subjects of MTV's Super Sweet Sixteen series. Lorcan was chosen from more than 200 people who had written to MTV from Ireland and Britain and asked to have his party covered by the show. So, how real is reality tv?

Lorcans dad Paddy Malone lashed out at the producers for constantly asking him to write blank cheques for the bash. "If they had their way I would be still writing cheques - they were very pushy (MTV). Lorcan is a cool kind of guy but they really tried to wind him up about the party." Paddy also admitted the crew put pressure on him to buy a new car for his son so it would look good on the show. He added: "I got out of it because Lorcan is only 16 and cannot legally drive until he's 17." Lorcan invited more than 500 people to his bash and insisted everyone wear white - apart from him as he dressed in blue to stand out from the crowd!!!

It is believed the boy received a EUR10,000 watch as a gift from his parents. However, the Shopping Centre which hosted his “invitation ceremony” supposedly paid his family a couple of grand to stage it there!! AND, MTV footed the bill for the party in Silence Night Club and for the appearance fee for Cascada. So, how much did the family actually fork out for the event? Do MTV pay for all the SSS parties? Hey, is it worth looking like a complete dork just to throw that kind of a bash?? And what about the aftermath?

Running the bases: Lynette's family emerged from the rubble of Mrs. McCluskey's house, but Ida wasn’t so lucky. Stunned that Ida sacrificed herself to keep the Scavo children safe, Lynette rescues her ashes to scatter them at a ballpark, as the former All-American League player wanted.

Between husbands: At Victor's funeral, his father, Milton, cheerfully informs the widow Gabby that she won’t be seeing a dime of the family cash. After telling this to Carlos, who is lying in a hospital bed, she gives him more pain medication and tries to break the news that the papers for his off-shore account were lost in the tornado. With Carlos properly sedated, she runs off to recover the documents at the accountant's -- except he's also dead. How dare he!

In the dark: Carlos and Gabrielle seem to be getting along rather well, even if he is rather woozy from the painkillers she gave him. Then again, she has no idea that his tornado injuries left him blind.

Madam Hodge: The hole in her roof means she and her family need to live at Susan's while repairs are under way, but her contractor breaks down and nixes the job after he learns his ex-boyfriend has just moved in with another man. Well, why not set the man up with her “out and proud homosexual” son? Vast age difference be damned!

The wrench: Initially terrified at taking in Ben, Bree and Orson, Susan soon sinks happily into a freshly laundered, duck a l'orange life, but annihilates Bree's setup to keep the homemade cookies coming -- and to keep herself sane while Mike's in rehab.

Unravelling: Furious that her husband has had an affair, Katherine kicks Adam out, but not before he finds the tell-all note that Aunt Lilly left for Dylan. What was in the note? We have no idea. There was much discussion of “it” and “betrayal,” and then Katherine ripped and tossed the paper in the fireplace. We were left with the image of Dylan piecing the note together and looking none too happy.

Most people can really concentrate for about 45 minutes — after that you'll probably want to take a short break. If you find yourself getting distracted and thinking about other things as you study, pull your attention back as soon as possible. Remind yourself that when your 45 minutes of studying are up, you can take a 15-minute break.

3. How to Study
As you study, review your notes and any special information from your textbook. In the case of math or science problems or equations, do some practice problems. Pay special attention to anything the teacher seemed to stress in class. (This is where good note-taking comes in handy!)

Many teachers tell students ahead of time what the format of an exam will be. This can help you tailor how you study. For example, if you know you are going to have multiple-choice questions on World War II, you'll know to focus on studying facts and details. On the other hand, if the exam will contain essay questions, you'll want to think about which topics are most likely to be covered. Then come up with several possible essay topics and use your notes, books, and other reference sources to figure out how you might answer questions on those topics.
When trying to memorize dates, names, or other factual information, keep in mind that it usually takes a number of tries to remember something correctly (that's one reason why it's a good idea to start studying well in advance of a test). Use special memory triggers that the teacher may have suggested or ones that you invent yourself. Read things over several times if you need to, and write down any phrases or thoughts that will help you remember main ideas or concepts.
Some people find it helps to teach what they're studying aloud to an imaginary student. Or work with a study partner and take turns teaching aloud. Another study technique is making flashcards that summarize some of the important facts or concepts. You can then use these to review for a test.

4. I'll Study Tomorrow and Other Excuses
It's tempting to put off studying until the last minute .If you're a procrastinator (and who isn't sometimes?), one of the best ways to overcome it is by staying organized. After you've written test dates and project due dates on a calendar, it's hard to ignore them. And sitting down to organize and plan your work really highlights how much time things take. Organization makes it harder to procrastinate.
Sometimes people put off studying because they feel overwhelmed by the fact that they're behind on things or they just feel really disorganized. Don't let this happen to you. Keep your notes organized, stay on top of required readings, and follow the other study tips mentioned above to stay focused and in control. Your teachers will give you plenty of notice on important tests so you have enough time to study for the type of exam you'll be taking.
But what if you're feeling overwhelmed by all the stuff you have to do? Are classes or extracurricular activities limiting your time to study properly? Ask your teachers for help prioritizing. Don't wait until the last minute to talk to your teachers, though, or you'll just look like a procrastinator! And don't be afraid to ask for help. Teachers respect students who are thoughtful and interested in learning and doing well.

5. Studying in a Crowd
Sometimes it can be useful to go over things with people who are studying for the same test: You can make sure that your notes are correct and that you understand the subject. Study groups are also helpful because you can work together to come up with ways to remember concepts and then test one another.
For some people who are easily distracted, though, study groups spell disaster because they get off the topic. When you're with a bunch of friends or classmates, you may spend more time hanging out than actually studying. One way to ensure quiet and focus when studying with a group is to do it in the library. You'll be forced to keep things more low-key than if you're at someone's kitchen table.
In the end, it comes down to what works best for you. If you like to study alone and feel most confident doing it that way, that's great. If you think you'd like to work in a group, try it out — just be aware of the drawbacks.

6. The Payoff
When you've finished studying, you should feel like you can approach the exam with confidence — not necessarily that you will get 100% of the answers correct, but that you have a good understanding of the information.
Most of all, DON’T PANIC if you can't remember some facts the night before the exam. Even if you've spent all evening studying, the brain needs time to digest all that information. You'll be surprised by what comes back to you after sleeping.

Ciara Cramer, 16, is a transition year student at Holy Faith Convent in Clontarf who enjoys films and recently saw ‘Sweeney Todd’, starring Johnny Depp. She is a talented artist and hopes to work in either theatre or film set design. She regularly meets up with friends in Temple Bar: ‘We generally eat about five times in an afternoon.’
Ciara says: “Fashion tends to be very stereotypical, and girls my age are branded on how we dress, and how much makeup we wear – there’s the D4s, the tracksuits, and the rockers.
“I don’t care whether a dress hails from Penneys or Urban Outfitters. I don’t fit into any category and would describe my style as ‘individual’.
“I really respect a girl who has the confidence to dress how she wants to rather than how she is expected to, even if, in my view, her style is hideous.
“The trend I really despise is the orange skin craze that has hit Dublin in the past year. Girls are flocking to outlets like Brown Thomas to buy bottles of fake tan and it looks like the whole nation has gone orange.
“I now realise appearing naturally sun-kissed is beside the point – and that what matters is whether you have the latest brand of fake tan streaked down your legs.
“The way I see it, orange skin, together with expensive Abercrombie & Fitch clothing and Ugg boots, has become more of a status symbol than a genuine fashion statement.
“I don’t get it that all the girls in the same area want to dress the same.
“I’m told there was a time when a girl with a tube of red lipstick would be the talk of the town. Now the desire for more and more make-up that some girls have is like an addiction.
“That’s not to say I never wear make-up, I do. I just don’t burst into tears if my Mac foundation runs out before I apply the fourth layer.
“Many girls feel vulnerable without their second face on. Some girls have even become so strongly reliant on make-up that to see their own face without it could make them feel ugly, when what they see is simply different and natural.

“I don’t have the desire or money to keep up with these trends.

Kate says: “Like most teenagers, I am influenced by the fashion and the beauty business – I buy magazines like Cosmo Girl and Kiss to look at the pictures and see what the models are wearing. And I love watching TV programmes like The O.C. and Desperate Housewives to see the clothes.
“ There is a lot of stereotyping during the teenage years and many of us belong to ‘cliques’ and all watch the same programmes and read the same magazines.
Most of us like shopping in TopShop, Urban Outfitters, Ted Baker, H&M and River Island.
“But you can like the same fashion but wear it differently – you can express yourself differently and show your individuality, even if you follow the same style.
“My friends talk about whether a night out is casual or formal. If it’s casual, we wear jeans with heels and a top, and a dress if it’s more formal. But we never look exactly the same.
“I love it when it’s a special occasion and I’m treated to a new outfit and progget my hair and make-up done professionally.
“I love going out on a Friday or Saturday night and getting all dolled up.
“Fashion and make-up can give a teenage girl confidence. A lot of teenage girls don’t have a lot of confidence and some can feel embarrassed about their image, especially with the pressure that comes from the opposite sex.
“Fashion definitely plays a big part in my life but I’m still unsure whether or not I want a career in the industry.

these kids are just plain annoying, the parties aren't anything special, and generally nothing exciting or amusing happens in the whole half hour..
Seriously. I keep waiting for the punchline to come…but then the credits roll and the show ends. I keep waiting for the super stretch limo in the end to explode into a million pieces and end my pain and suffering. But it just doesn’t happen.

For those of you unfamiliar with the show - it follows around teenagers on their party planning adventure for their sweet 16 party. Fair game. Except they are the most ridiculous, waste of space, self centered group of kids I have ever seen with parents that are just as stupid, wasteful and irresponsible as their children. These are parents that are laying out anywhere from $200k-500k for a party for their spoiled worthless children who will end up like Paris Hilton and be famous for doing nothing! It really makes me sick. I can’t stand to see people waste their money and raise such idiot children (and then fill my tv space with them!!). I would really like to see at least one episode where the parents decide to buy their kids a brain transplant instead of a new Mercedes.

Lohan's thriller, "I Know Who Killed Me," in which she plays two characters who may or may not be the same person, received a leading nine Razzie nominations, among them worst picture of 2007. A quick A-Z reference guide to snowboard language!You're not a happening snowboarder unless you can talk the talk. Here's an abbreviated glossary, to help you become erudite at elevation.

air dog (aer dog), noun: a snowboarder who's interested only in jumping. "Pat is some air dog -- he rides just so he can take flight."

bonk (bonk), verb: to hit a hard object. "Awesome! Al just bonked a skier!"

cat out the window (kat out the windoe), noun : a jump where the rider flails uncontrollably through the air. "Polly hit that mogul and man, did she do a cat out the window."

duckfoot (dukfut), noun: a snowboard stance where your feet point outward. "My boards got a soft setup so I'm doing the duckfoot."

eurocarver (your'o'carv'r), noun: a snowboarder who uses hard-shell boots, plate bindings, and racing boards to lay out high-speed carves. "Bill is a pure eurocarver, dude, right down to his euro-chic threads."

fakie (fay kee), verb: to ride a snowboard backwards. "I bonked a log, did a 180, and fakied the rest of the ride."

half pipe (half peyep), noun : a trough dug out of snow, used for freestyle jumps. "Heads up -- those air dogs are gonna huck the half pipe."

huck (huk), verb: to jump recklessly. For usage, see above.

huckfest (huk fest), noun: a testosterone fueled session where riders try for bigger and bigger air. "There's a huckfest up at the half pipe."

jibber (jibbr), noun: a reckless rider. "Emily bonked two skiers on the way down. She's some jibber."

kicker (kikr), noun: an abrupt jump that sends a rider high into the air. "That big mogul is just begging for a kicker."

phat (fat), adjective: "Carol hucked that mogul and man, did she grab some phat air."

shred (shred), verb: to ride very well. "The pow is awesome today. Were really gonna shred."

stinky (stinkee), adverb: a term used to describe riding with your legs spread apart and your knees pointing out. "Ginger's doing the duckfoot and riding stinky."

tweaked (twikd), verb: to make your body joints appear twisted. "Watch me tweak this kicker."

Jessica Simpson's Hot Pants

Most mere mortals can't expect to look like Jessica Simpson in the film The Dukes of Hazzard, but you can take steps to achieving legs fit for hot pants, even if you are not brave enough to ever wear them.

This will raise your bottom and sculpt your thighs:
Stand with your feet approximately two feet apart. Then turn your feet outwards, keeping them in line with your knees. Hold your arms out in front of you and slowly lower yourself down until your thighs are parallel with the floor. Keep your bottom tucked underneath you and your stomach pulled in. Hold this position for three seconds before slowly standing back up. Do 20 repetitions.

For sleek calves:
Stand on a step, and then back up until your heels are off the step and you are supported only by the balls of your feet. Raise yourself up on your toes, and then slowly lower your heels until they are level with the step. Do 20 repetitions.

To tone both your bottom and backs of thighs:
Lie on the floor face down. Put your forehead on your forearms. Bend one knee and point your toes toward the ceiling. Hold your stomach in and squeeze your buttocks together, and keeping both hips on the floor, lift your thigh off the ground and hold for one to six seconds, then slowly lower it down again. Do 20 repetitions on each leg.

To tighten the whole thigh and buttock area:
Stand with feet hip width apart. Put your hands on your hips. Step forward with one leg and bend from the knee until your thigh is parallel to the floor. Squeeze your buttocks as you slowly return to the starting position. Do 20 repetitions on each leg.

Follow this plan for four weeks and soon your will be baring your pins with pride! Eat your heart out Daisy Duke!
